Crux Outdoors: A New Direction for a Changing Adventure Industry

Crux Outdoors: Our Next Chapter

Over the past few years, Crux Outdoors has built a reputation for creating adventurous experiences that stand apart.

We pioneered cliff camping in Scotland, giving people the chance to spend a night suspended hundreds of feet above the ground on a portaledge. We delivered bespoke guided rock climbing, tailored to every client’s ambitions and ability. We created off-road driving adventures through rugged Highland landscapes, often blending wild camping with authentic local hospitality.

But if you joined us for one of those adventures, you might not have seen what was happening behind the scenes.

While we were designing and delivering those experiences, we were also planning complex operations, developing safety systems, and solving logistical problems for projects that stretched far beyond the UK.

Why We’re Evolving

Over time, more organisations began to seek us out — not for a weekend adventure, but for our expertise in challenging, high-risk, and remote environments.

Charities asked us to structure overseas fundraising treks in regions with limited infrastructure. Film production companies needed risk assessments for shoots in politically sensitive or environmentally volatile locations. Expedition operators wanted us to stress-test their operating procedures before launching in new destinations.

It became clear: our greatest impact was no longer just in running adventures, but in helping others plan and execute them safely and successfully.

So, after much consideration, we’ve made a decisive move.

Crux Outdoors: Specialist Adventure & Expedition Consultancy

From now on, Crux Outdoors will focus entirely on providing consultancy services for adventurous and expeditionary projects — in the UK and worldwide.

Our work covers:

  • Field Safety Audits – stress-testing safety systems on the ground and recommending improvements.

  • Recce & Site Assessments – assessing access, environmental factors, medical facilities, and cultural considerations before a project begins.

  • Destination Risk Assessments – analysing political, environmental, and logistical risks for new destinations.

  • Policy & Protocol Development – building operational documents that keep teams safe and compliant.

  • Training & Leadership – scenario-based training to prepare leaders, crew, and teams for real-world challenges.

  • Film & TV Safety Support – specialist safety input for productions in remote or hostile locations.

We work with:

  • Film & TV production companies

  • Charities and NGOs

  • Adventure travel and expedition operators

  • Educational institutions

  • Brands and agencies launching campaigns in high-risk or unusual settings

Our job is simple: to make sure your project is not only possible, but safe, efficient, and culturally and environmentally respectful.

The Launch of Crux Expeditions

While our consultancy work will take us behind the scenes of some of the most ambitious and logistically complex projects in the world, we haven’t stepped away from leading adventures ourselves.

Alongside our consultancy services, we’re launching Crux Expeditions — a completely new approach to small-group, international adventure travel.

Most expeditions are sold like a package holiday: you book, you turn up, and you hope you get along with the group. We believe that’s backwards. A great expedition isn’t just about the location — it’s about the people you share it with, and the preparation you put in before the first step.

The Crux Expeditions Difference

Here’s how we do it differently:

  1. You choose your expedition from our handpicked portfolio of destinations — places we know intimately and operate in partnership with trusted, in-country teams.

  2. You meet your leader and your team in the UK for a training weekend well before departure. Over two days, we hike, practise navigation, campcraft, and first aid, and run realistic destination-based scenarios.

  3. You decide if it’s the right fit. If the group dynamics or trip don’t feel right, you can switch to another expedition — no awkwardness, no lost investment.

If you go ahead, your training weekend fee is deducted from the expedition cost. If not, you still leave with two days of professional skills training and a realistic taste of expedition life.

Why It Works

By the time we leave the UK, our teams aren’t strangers — they’re already a functioning group with shared experience, trust, and a common goal. That means fewer surprises in the field, better decision-making under pressure, and more meaningful shared moments.

Our trips are small, expertly led, and designed for both challenge and cultural depth. They’re not mass-market itineraries — they’re handcrafted journeys where safety, environmental respect, and local relationships are as important as the adventure itself.

From high-altitude climbs in the Greater Ranges to treks through Arctic wilderness, desert crossings, and remote jungle expeditions, every Crux Expedition is built to challenge, inspire, and connect you with a team you’ll want to know for life.

From Scotland to the World

The skills we honed while building our Scottish adventures — meticulous planning, safety-first thinking, and a commitment to delivering experiences that feel real — are exactly what we now bring to global consultancy and expeditions.

The environments may change — from Highland peaks to Himalayan passes, Arctic icefields, African savannahs, and dense tropical jungles — but the approach remains the same: Plan thoroughly. Adapt constantly. Lead with care.

What This Means for You

If you’re an organisation planning an adventurous project, we can help you:

  • Identify and mitigate risks before they cause problems

  • Build robust operating systems and protocols

  • Prepare your team to perform under pressure

  • Navigate complex cultural, environmental, and logistical challenges

If you’re an individual, you’ll soon have the chance to join us in the field with Crux Expeditions — where our consultancy-grade planning meets authentic, challenging adventure.

The Next Step

This isn’t an ending. It’s the natural evolution of everything Crux Outdoors has stood for: adventure, done properly.

Whether you need an expert to assess a filming location in the desert, develop a risk strategy for a remote trek, or lead your team into the mountains — we’re here to help.

And if you’re ready for your own adventure, keep watching. Crux Expeditions launches soon.
