Field Safety Audits & Consultancy
Independent insight to strengthen your safety management systems — in the UK or worldwide.
Helping You Deliver Adventure Safely
Robust safety systems are the backbone of any credible adventure, travel, or outdoor programme. But policies alone don’t guarantee safety. It’s the alignment between paperwork, people, and practice that makes the difference.
Crux Outdoors offers an independent consultancy service focused on reviewing and improving the safety of programmes operating in remote, dynamic, or high-risk environments. We bring extensive operational experience — not just in risk theory, but in actual field delivery — to assess whether your systems are working as intended, and where the real gaps lie.
Our approach is pragmatic, constructive, and proportionate to the setting. We look at risk in context, providing practical recommendations that help you meet duty-of-care obligations without compromising your programme’s integrity or intent.
This service is particularly valuable for organisations delivering complex outdoor activity programmes, international expeditions, or field-based community work. Whether you require a one-off audit or long-term support, we provide reassurance, clarity, and actionable insight.

Case Studies
Adventure Base – Guided Adventure Product Risk Audit
The challenge
Adventure Base was preparing to launch new guided adventure products across Morocco and the Alps. With documentation in place and experienced guides on hand, the team was confident in their internal systems but sought an independent review to ensure those systems would hold up in unpredictable field conditions.
Our solution
Crux Outdoors conducted a stress-test of their existing safety protocols, focusing on usability and adaptability in dynamic environments. This included simulated incident scenarios, field-team interviews, and a review of supporting resources like SOPs and medevac plans.
The audit revealed that while the documentation was sound, it relied too heavily on static assumptions. We recommended simplifying escalation flows, introducing real-time risk briefings into the guide routine, and creating a slimmed-down emergency reference pack suitable for mountain environments. These changes were implemented ahead of the new product season and received positive feedback from field staff.

In Your Element – Safety System Review for Multi-Activity Operations
The challenge
In Your Element is an established outdoor activity provider operating across multiple sites in Scotland, offering water-based, mountain and forest activities for families, corporate groups, and schools. As the business expanded its team and introduced new activities across different locations, the leadership team identified the need for an external review of their safety management systems to ensure consistency, field usability, and alignment with current best practice.
Our solution
Crux Outdoors was engaged to carry out a comprehensive review of In Your Element’s safety documentation, risk assessments, staff briefing materials and incident protocols. This was followed by field visits to observe delivery of sessions including canoeing, archery, and gorge walking, allowing for practical assessment of how systems translated to real-world activity.
The review highlighted key strengths, including a strong safety culture and staff confidence, but also revealed areas where procedures could be streamlined. We provided recommendations to simplify dynamic risk tools, improve clarity in medical escalation routes, and standardise safety briefings across locations. A new incident report structure was also proposed, designed to encourage reflective practice while meeting insurance and compliance standards.
