Course Overview

This Introduction to Rock Climbing Course is designed as the progression from our Taster session but would suit anyone who has climbed indoors or tried outdoor climbing and wants to progress towards being self-sufficient. The highly accessible quarries and crags of the Scottish Central Belt provide the perfect environment to learn the essential skills of rope work and using the technical equipment required for traditional and sport climbing. All of the training is practical and hands on so expect to do a lot of climbing over the two days.

During this course the focus is on seconding routes, placing and removing climbing equipment and creating top-rope anchor systems. By the end of the two days you will feel confident in your ability to partner a competent leader and independently use appropriate rope work to climb crags where you can easily access the top. If you are looking for a course which focuses on outdoor lead climbing or more advanced rope techniques then have a look at our lower ratio Learn to Lead courses.

Course Outcomes

  • Understand and practise the skills required to second a lead climber on a traditionally protected route

  • Understand where and how to use climbing protection including nuts, cams, hexs and slings

  • Understand and be able to apply the principles of building a safe climbing anchor

  • Use a guidebook to select an appropriate climb to suit your ability and ambitions

  • Develop and refine effective and efficient climbing techniques

  • When does the course start and finish?
Start time: 09:30 - Finish time: 16:00. Please note, these times are approximate and could be subject to minor changes. Please leave plenty of time when booking public transport.
  • What's the minimum/maximum age for participation?
Anyone aged 13 or over can attend any of our scheduled courses. We hold an AALA license and are able to take out children who are younger than 13, however we only offer this on a private guided basis. See our private guiding rates, as this can work out very competitive, especially when booking as a family. There is no maximum age, if you feel young enough to attend then you are very welcome!
  • Does the course price include food and drink?
Almost all courses begin and end at our initial meeting place, which is usually a car park. Here your instructor will be able to provide a quick brew and a snack whilst chatting about the days activity. We do not provide food as part of our courses and you will need to bring a packed lunch along for each day. There are often local cafes within a short drive of our locations (but not always!) that can provide you with sandwiches, cakes and drinks.
  • How do I book?
All of our courses can be booked privately, with a private instructor just for you or your group. This gives you the flexibility to book any date that suits you and also it means the instructor can fine-tune the course content to suit your aspirations. To make a booking, simply follow our online booking link below, or get in touch to discuss any specific requirements or changes you might have in mind.
  • Are there any pre-requisites?
Some indoor or outdoor rock climbing experience would be beneficial, but is not essential.
